Pleaz Wiley Sanders
November 30, 1868 - January 30, 1919
|
Pleaz was born in McMullen County, Texas to James M Sanders and Nancy Carline Weaver Sanders. James - along with his Father and brothers - were all Texas Rangers. James died from an accidental gunshot wound when Pleaz Wiley was three years old. His Mother Nancy Carline - remarried in 1873 to Washington Reed Poteet.
Pleaz Wiley Sanders grew up in south Texas, in McMullen, Uvalde and Zavala counties. His family was in the ranching business, both cattle and horses.
On August 17, 1900, he married Mollie Lou Holder in Hagerman, Chavez County, New Mexico. He and several of his family worked at the Acme Brick Co in nearby Acme, New Mexico. Sometime between 1900 and 1904, Pleaz Wiley and Mollie Lou, along with his half-brother Francis M Poteet, moved to the Rodeo New Mexico area. Their first child, Meda Eva, was born in Paradise, Arizona on July 8, 1905. Their other children were all born in Rodeo, New Mexico: Pleaz Marian on August 12, 1908; Bessie Ethel on March 27, 1915; and Francis Wiley Sanders on October 8, 1917.
Pleaz raised cattle, a large number of horses and goats. He built a house and corrals. He was a hard worker - sometimes going to Silver City and other places for a job to support his family. A violin that belonged to Pleaz (he played at Saturday night dances) is still in the family.
Pleaz Wiley Sanders died from flu and pneumonia during the flu epidemic in 1919, 9 days after after his half-brother Frank Poteet. He is buried in the Poteet/Sanders plots.
